• Nanoparticles synthesized by Polyol process show superparamagnetic behaviour according to the thermal variation of their dc-magnetization.

• Our investigations permit to classify Zn0.8Co0.2Fe2O4 NPs as toxic for HUVECs with doses higher than 10 μg/mL for an exposure time of 4 h.

• Zn0.8Co0.2Fe2O4 NPs provoke acute toxic effects in New Zealand rabbits.
